Release of SDG4 Scorecard for Africa - UNESCO UIS & GEM
The 2025 SDG 4 Scorecard for Africa, a joint publication by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) and the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report team, is now published. This latest report highlights national education targets and efforts to reduce out-of-school rates across the continent, showing that countries have collectively committed to reducing out-of-school numbers in Africa by 58 million by 2030 in their national SDG 4 benchmarks.
Newly released figures show the extent of the challenge, with 118 million children and youth in Africa out of school. The Scorecard also incorporates data from conflict-affected countries, adding to the out-of-school estimates. For the first time, the out-of-school population in Somalia is estimated at 3.7 million, while in Sudan, the number has risen sharply from 6.6 million to 11.4 million.
