EiE Hub Members Urge COP30 Leaders to Prioritise Education in Climate Action
Members of the Geneva Global Hub for Education in Emergencies (EiE Hub) are calling on world leaders to place children’s education at the centre of discussions during the upcoming COP30 summit in Belém, Brazil.
The EiE Hub warns that the climate crisis is having a devastating impact on learning worldwide, disrupting education for at least 242 million students in 2024 alone. Heatwaves, floods, and other climate-related events are damaging schools, affecting teachers, and putting children—especially those already vulnerable—at greater risk of dropping out.
Despite its importance, education remains largely neglected in global climate strategies and funding. Only 2.4% of financing from key multilateral climate funds since 2006 has supported child-responsive projects.
The EiE Hub stresses that investing in education is one of the most effective and sustainable ways to tackle the climate crisis. “Education is a powerful tool for resilience,” the statement reads, urging governments and donors to integrate education into national climate plans, increase investments in climate-resilient education systems, and include children and youth in policymaking.
The call comes as world leaders prepare for COP30, where the EiE Hub hopes education will finally be recognised as central to both climate adaptation and sustainable development.
