Meeting the Inequality Emergency: Building a New Era of Understanding and Cooperation

Monday 16 March 2026
15:30 – 17:00 CET
Room VIII, Floor 3, Building A, Palais des Nations

The G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality – commissioned by President Cyril Ramaphosa for South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 – published the first ever report on global inequality to the G20 in November 2025. Chaired by Nobel Prize-winning economist Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz, the Committee’s key recommendation is the creation of a new International Panel on Inequality (IPI) – inspired by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The Panel would monitor trends and assess drivers and consequences of inequality and evaluate alternative policies for addressing it, to inform governments, policy makers, and the international community.

On the occasion of the first meeting of the Founding Committee* of the IPI this high-level event will hear from Professor Stiglitz, some of the leading governments and experts supporting process, and key multilateral agencies. They will lead a discussion on the requirements and challenges ahead in meeting the inequality emergency.

The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) is pleased to host this event, in association with the Governments of Brazil, South Africa and Spain, and Winnie Byanyima, Director of UNAIDS and member of the Founding Committee for the International Panel on Inequality, and NORRAG.
